How to set an XRPL trust line

Published by XRPline · Updated 20 October 2026

A trust line is a TrustSet that lets your account hold a specific issued currency from a specific issuer up to a limit. Without it, inbound IOU payments usually fail with tecNO_LINE. Creating a line typically raises OwnerCount and locks incremental owner reserve (commonly ~0.2 XRP per object after late-2024 reductions — confirm live server_state).

Key facts

  • Transaction: TrustSet with LimitAmount (currency + issuer + value)
  • Failure without line: tecNO_LINE on inbound IOU
  • Reserve impact: Usually +1 OwnerCount → +incremental reserve
  • Native XRP: Does not use trust lines

What a trust line is (and is not)

On the XRP Ledger, issued tokens (IOUs) are identified by the pair currency code + issuer classic address. The same three-letter code from two issuers is two different assets. A trust line is your account’s explicit permission to hold that pair up to a limit you choose.

Native XRP never requires a trust line. IOUs, stablecoins, and many airdrop tokens do. XRPline Manager lists every line on an account so you can see currency, issuer, balance, limit, and freeze-related flags before you Sign TrustSet.

Prerequisites

  • A funded classic address with enough XRP for the transaction fee plus any new incremental owner reserve.
  • The correct issuer address — not only a ticker. Verify on project docs and explorers such as XRPSCAN.
  • A currency code (standard 3-character or 160-bit hex) matching that issuer.
  • A limit greater than zero — your maximum accepted balance for that pair.

Step-by-step: create the line

  1. Verify the issuer. Currency codes are not globally unique. Confirm the classic address before you Sign TrustSet.
  2. Choose a limit. Set a value you are willing to hold. You can raise or lower it later with another TrustSet.
  3. Submit TrustSet. Include LimitAmount with currency, issuer, and value. In XRPline, use Sign TrustSet so your wallet shows the payload.
  4. Wait for validation. After the ledger accepts the tx, account_lines should list the new RippleState. Reload Manager to confirm.

Owner reserve and fees

Account reserve on XRPL is locked XRP, not a fee. Total reserve ≈ base reserve + (OwnerCount × incremental owner reserve). After network fee voting in late 2024, many operators cite ~1 XRP base and ~0.2 XRP per owned object — always verify live values in your wallet or in XRPline’s network strip.

Each new trust line usually increases OwnerCount by one unless an exemption applies (see first two trust lines). Closing an empty line with a zero balance and a cleared limit can reduce OwnerCount and return incremental reserve once the ledger accepts the transaction.

Edge cases

  • Authorized trust lines: some issuers require authorization before the line is usable.
  • Freeze: issuer freeze flags can block send/receive even with a line present.
  • Wrong issuer: you may open a useless line and still pay reserve until you close it.
  • Wallet UI limits: some wallets hide advanced TrustSet fields — always read the signing payload.

Using XRPline safely

XRPline is a non-custodial TrustLine manager for the XRP Ledger. You connect a wallet or paste a classic address for read-only previews; when you create, change, or remove lines, your wallet signs the TrustSet payload. We never ask for seed phrases or private keys.

Reserve figures, freeze flags, and line tables come from public ledger reads and XRPSCAN API surfaces documented on Methodology. Confirm live base and incremental reserve via server_state before you budget XRP for new lines.

TrustSet, tecNO_LINE, and IOU receipts

This page (guides/set-trustline/) sits in the XRPline trust line cluster for xrpline.org. On ledger, issued assets are never identified by ticker alone: every IOU payment path resolves to a currency code plus issuer classic address. When a receiver lacks that RippleState, validated payments commonly end with result code tecNO_LINE rather than crediting balance.

Creating or updating a line is always a TrustSet transaction. LimitAmount.value sets the maximum IOU balance you accept from that issuer. Setting value to zero after clearing balance removes the object and typically lowers OwnerCount. Wallets may hide the JSON, which is why XRPline exposes a Sign TrustSet preview before you approve.

Native XRP transfers do not use this mechanism. If you only hold XRP, reserve math still applies (base plus owned objects), but you will not see tecNO_LINE for missing IOU lines.

FAQ

Do I need a trust line to hold XRP?

No. Native XRP does not use trust lines. Trust lines apply to issued currencies (IOUs) from specific issuers only.

Why did my payment fail with tecNO_LINE?

The destination has no trust line for that currency+issuer pair, or limit/authorization blocks receipt. Create the correct TrustSet first.

How much XRP does a new trust line lock?

Typically one incremental owner reserve per new owned object — often cited as ~0.2 XRP after 2024 network reductions. Confirm live server_state in the app.
